My girlfriend spent most of this afternoon on the back of the Z, learning how to ride. She’s a quick learner and got used to balancing and turning quickly too. The clutch is still a bit of a sore spot for her but next time she’ll probably master it.
On the Z, my knees bash into this lip on the tank, but she’s able to grip the tank very nicely with her knees and legs. So she’s already getting used to not putting weight on her arms and hands for support.
Overall 10/10 bike for learning the most basic of basics. I am looking into an old CB300 or a rebel for her to have an actual bike though.... You really need some confidence in applying the throttle and shifting to have one of these in a suburban area. If you only ride in a city, this can definitely do you just fine. But for higher speed roads, a very sligh tly larger bike will probably be better.

Good call, 300cc is a great starting point. They’re pretty quick but still manageable, light weight and doesn’t need the full wrist out on the highway.
First time on the road for me was on a beat to shit CBR125 and that thing scared me because of how low performance it felt. Very next ride I got on a CB300F and I felt insurmountably better on it.
Smooth inputs
and k
eep that shiny side up!

I think I mentioned before that I learned on a Z125. Super friendly bike and I was going WOT through everything by the end of the first day of the BRC.
I had the same knee problem. Also, my inseam is only 33 inches, but I found myself splaying my legs a bit to get comfortable. I also had to stand at nearly every interval because it was murdering my butt and lower back.
But it was tremendous fun!

I did over 120 miles on it on Saturday so I broke it in nicely. It really does ride well, despite being such a little pocket bike. Once she gets confident on it, well look into something else for her. We’re moving to the southwest soon so she’ll get to ride year round at that point.

Yeah, it’s not bad in a parking lot, but I basically go full-twist the second I’m on the road and that takes a bit of confidence to know to do and also doesn’t teach throttle control too well.
She had a few ham fisted moments, particularly when leaving from a dead stop. I shudder to think of how many people have those moments on the street, on a very high powered bike. Cause it was spooky enough for her on the 125.

120 miles?! Thats impressive. Idk if I could have done that. But I imagine it would be tons of fun in the city or on some tight roads.

Yeah, it was mostly out in the boonies west of my town. About 30-40 miles were straight shots of a couple miles at a time but most of it was meandering rural 2-lane road. Honestly, aside from the tank, the Z is much more comfortable than the grom for long trips.

She’s wanted to for a while, but her previous partners were all not riders and no one in her family has one. So when I got the grom last year, she thought about it and when I got the Z this year, she asked if she could learn.

Nice, not that I’m *super* itching to ride or anything like that, but my wife made it very clear that I’m not allowed to lol
Does your GF have an aspirational
bike that she hopes to get
?

Lol, yes and it’s a relatively tame one:
But she jokes she has an inner desire to be a bit chic and Parisian so when I told her of the idea of running a ro und downtown on a scooter with a basket as she picks up groceries from small shops, she was 110% on board.

She is far classier than I deserve, but she sticks around me despite my own faults. I can’t complain.
